What does sisterhood and community mean to you?
I would describe sisterhood and community in my life as something crucially important to me. The most important women in my life such as my mother, sister, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, friends, teachers, have all played an extreme part in raising me. Sisterhood can be between one person or the power of women all coming together in one place. Whether it be hearing their wisdom/advice, seeing their experiences firsthand, or observing their interactions, it has definitely shaped me in so many ways. As for this wellness retreat, it has brought sisterhood and connection into ways I never knew were possible. Each person has had an effect on me. Their individual life-experiences and personalities have taught me so many lessons and inspiration. The bonds are still so strong.
Who is Tash?
That is a good question. To start, the basics. I am a woman in her early thirties in the graphic design profession. I have a small business @dash.of.tash that is my full-time gig. I specialize in the wedding stationery sector. I love my job - best decision I made and it took a lot to get there. Besides my profession, I love to cook and bake. I am always saving new recipes to try on weekends and throughout the week. I love hearty and comforting meals such as stews and soups. I love animals and I adopted a rescue dog from Mexico; my dog Maui is my pride and joy. He is so loved and despite his anxiety-aggressive nature, he loves me and my family so much. Giving a better life for an animal who has an undeserving life is so important to me.
What’s one way that women can cultivate that “retreat feeling” back home?
It is normal to lose the high you feel from the retreat when you get back home. Work and home life kick in and the day-to-day responsibilities and routine find their way back to you. I find that keeping in touch with the ladies on group chat is great, it is a continuation from the retreat that ties you together. Taking time for yourself each day is most necessary, such as incorporating meditation/ breathing and stretching exercises. I also find the art of cooking and tapping into the curiosity of new recipes makes me feel that connection to the retreat.
Tell us about woman who has been a significant inspiration to you.
There are so many women who have shaped who I am, but my mother is my most significant inspiration. As I am in my early thirties, I look back on how much my mother has done for us. She was a business owner and was always there for my father, sister and her own parents/siblings. I don’t know how she managed to do it all without ever complaining or frustration. Always with a smile on her face and has handled everything with compassion and grace.
What are you most passionate about at this stage in your life? What have you created that you’re most proud of?
At this stage in life, my passions are increasing. I love to design/create and cook/bake. So far, I am most proud of creating my own graphic design company “Dash of Tash" back in 2020. Taking the leaf of faith was the greatest achievement I have accomplished for myself.
What are your favourite acts of self-care/ wellness that are always present in your daily rituals?
Truthfully, I don’t practice enough of it. I am in the process of learning to. The small acts would be taking a shower in the mornings, getting ready for the day. Making sure I eat breakfast and taking the time to drink my coffee are some self-care practices I do enjoy.
How do you connect in a deeper and more meaningful way with our natural world?
Getting yourself outdoors is crucial. Taking a bit of time each day to be outside in nature is really important for your physical and mental well-being.
One fun fact about Tash!
One fun fact about me is that I am unbeatable at Mario Kart haha. I am very competitive at gaming. When I have downtime, you will find me playing Super Mario on my Nintendo DS.
Is there a book or movie you’ve enjoyed recently that you’d recommend?
I love historical dramas. I am currently watching a show on Netflix called “The Empress”; it's a historical drama series based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. It is so well done and addicting to watch. Highly recommend for those lovers of period pieces!
