There are places in the world that feel like a remembering. Sardinia is one of them.

When I first arrived in Dorgali, a region nestled in the rugged heart of Sardinia’s mountainous countryside, something ancient stirred in me. The land felt untouched and timeless, a place where the rhythms of nature still guide the day. Shepherds tending their flocks on expansive hillsides, women kneading fresh dough in sunlit kitchens, neighbors gathering to enjoy wine and laughter. It was here, among the rolling hills and warm-hearted locals, that I knew the Serenità retreat needed to visit.

My passion for holistic health, ancestral wisdom, and slow living was reignited during my stay. Sardinia isn’t just beautiful, it’s alive with tradition. The people here don’t rush, they savor. They connect. They live long, vibrant lives, not because of a secret formula, but because of how deeply they live in tune with the land, their community, and themselves.

Most Sardinians don’t even call themselves Italian, they’re “Sardo.” Their culture is distinct, fiercely local, and beautifully preserved. Everything you eat is grown locally. Meals are shared, not just consumed. And at the forefront of everything, connection with family, with nature, and with purpose, is the daily ritual.

This is the essence of the Blue Zone.

Lessons from the Land: What Sardinia Teaches Us About Wellness

Sardinia is one of five Blue Zones in the world, regions where people live longer and healthier than anywhere else, where it's common to meet men and women over 100 years old. Researchers have identified nine lifestyle principles, the 'Power 9' that contribute to this extraordinary longevity.

And in Sardinia, these aren’t trends, they're tradition.

These principles are incredibly simple, and deeply impactful. And somehow, it feels like these values have become a bit lost along the way, becoming replaced by busy, success-driven, technology fueled lifestyles. But let's take a look at how it's been done for previous generations, for hundreds if not thousands of years, in the Blue Zone regions:

  • Move Naturally: Sardinians walk a lot, often at elevation due to the mountainous landscape, tend gardens, and live in harmony with the land.

  • Purpose: Life is guided by meaning, your why. Whether through family, craft, or community, your 'Ikigai', as it's known in Japan, is your reason to wake up each morning.

  • Downshift: Stress is eased through daily rituals, prayer, and time in nature.

  • Wine at 5: Meals are slow, joyful, and shared with loved ones, often including a glass of local, homemade wine.

  • Belonging: Faith and tradition offer grounding and connection.

  • 80% Rule: Or, 'Hara Hachi Bu', meaning that the meal is finished when you are 80% full.

  • Plant Slant: Meals are mostly plant based and unprocessed, including beans, legumes, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and whole grains, and small portions of local meat and dairy.

  • Loved Ones First: Family is everything. Elders are honored, and relationships are prioritized.

  • Right Tribe: Sardinians surround themselves with supportive, like-minded people.

These values aren’t exclusive to Sardinia, they’re accessible to all of us. Begin by slowing down. Make time in your schedule for 'il dolce far niente', the sweetness of doing nothing. Share a meal with someone you love. Take a walk without your phone. Breathe deeply. Laugh often. Let connection and nature be your medicine.
